OPENSPACE began exploring other forms of artistic expression, such as photography and video, in 2000 initially to complement its theater productions. This resulted in multimedia performances wherein live actors interacted with videos projected on a screen. This eventually led the group to co-produce various video projects such as music videos, infomercials and corporate audio-visual presentations. Early in 2008, encouraged by these experiences, the group decided to explore the possibility of producing a television show and a few months later, in September, we launched “PORTRAITS: Tales From A Hill Station,” a cable-television series that aimed to tell relevant and colorful stories about life in Baguio City. The first three episodes painted a portrait of the history of the city from pre-colonial times to today. But sadly, the group, which produced the project independently, could not sustain the TV show on its own, and the show folded up with those first three episodes. But audience response to the series was positive, with encouraging comments coming both from local audiences and from abroad. Since then, we have been receiving requests for a re-airing of the series and inquiries on the possibility of a DVD-Video version of the documentary. Encouraged by this, the group, after reviewing the episodes and deciding that a re-shoot and a re-edit was necessary, once again packed its improvised lighting and sound equipment, rented a camera, and the result was this – PORTRAIT OF A HILL STATION, a documentary on the history of Baguio City. PORTRAIT OF A HILL STATION is our group's humble contribution to the celebration of the city's centennial and we hope that by painting a portrait of the City of Baguio, we can help reawaken our people's sense of history, our sense of pride and our sense of community as we write Baguio's history in the 21st century today. |
